ChorusBells.jpg

CHORUS OF THE BELLS from Pagliacci - Leoncavallo
arr. Cary Dachtyl
The Chorus of Bells, from Leoncavallo’s Il Pagliacci, is an arrangement of the vocal chorus of towns people on their way to vespers before a night at the traveling show. Little do they know what’s in store for them. The chorus starts very strong and fades away as the villagers move off to the church and ends quietly.
Although mostly a mallet ensemble, the timpani and added orchestral percussion really adds to the piece.  Both marimba parts can be performed on a single instrument. If a 5 octave is available, the performer may transpose some of the Marimba 2 parts to a lower octave.

Percusive Arts Society Review -

Arranged for percussion ensemble and holding quite true to the original, this adaptation of “Chorus of the Bells” from Pagliacci is a festive tune for six mallet players, percussion, and timpani.

The piece is set in 3/4 time at a moderate tempo, with only one brief ritardando before returning to the original tempo. All keyboard percussion parts are playable with two mallets, and the timpani part has limited pitch changes. Two marimbas are required due to a few passages where the lower and upper parts overlap, but a low-A marimba could work for the lower voice if you are willing to transpose the final low-F up an octave. Double stops are called for in multiple parts, but in very accessible contexts. There are some sixteenth-note triplets and quintuplets in the melody from time to time and numerous overlapping, independent melodic lines that will require confident players but not a high level of technical facility. The percussion and chime parts are notably the easiest within the ensemble.

This arrangement would potentially be a very effective piece for intermediate high school percussionists. It starts big and boisterous, but allows an ensemble to showcase its softer side as the chorus fades away. It would also likely complement “drummy” or more contemporary works that might be programmed alongside.

Cryptic-Blue.jpg

CRYPTIC BLUE PLANET LAKE
Joseph Van Hassel - A Percussion Quintet for 3 Wood Blocks, Snare Drum, 2 Concert Toms, Large Tam-Tam, Bass Drum.

The Cryptic Blue Planet Lake was written as a vehicle for middle school percussion students to practice non-conducted chamber music performance, phrasing on indefinitely pitched percussion instruments, and dynamic control.  The Cryptic Blue Planet Lake is based on rhythmic material from the score to a very well known super-hero film.

Percussive Arts Society Review: This 65-measure elementary-level percussion quintet will provide younger percussionists with timbres that are not keyboard percussion but which function in a tunefully lyrical presentation. Conceived by the composer for a summer music camp, “The Cryptic Blue Planet Lake” opens with player one performing on three woodblocks punctuated by a large tam-tam and bass drum. Snare drum and tom-toms join the musical discussion in this accessible 4/4 piece with tasteful dynamic contrast. This per- cussion quintet would be appropriate for a middle school percussion ensemble.

Piece-for-Ghana.jpg

PIECE FOR GHANA
Sarah Waters
Piece for Ghana is written for 5 Djembes, however, you may substitute other drums as needed for players 3-5. This piece is intended to introduce players to djembe playing techniques. There is a description of playing techniques included in the score.

Percussive Arts Society Review:

“Piece for Ghana” by Dr. Sarah Waters of the Ohio Northern University faculty is a great introductory work for beginner to intermediate percussionists needing to improve their West African hand drumming techniques. The piece calls for five djembes, but three of these could be substituted with other drums, presumably congas, tubano, kpanlogo, or similar hand drums using tone, slap, and bass strokes with hand/palm technique. The piece is in 4/4 throughout with simple but effective rhythms and inter-play. Although the score does not detail the tunings of the hand drums, most of the interplay comes from the slap strokes, so drums tuned in unison (or not) would work well. Cowbell, shakers, jamblock, and handclaps (and a brief unison vocal exclamation) are additional instruments used. The clearly notated and easy-to-read score parts detail the various hand strokes with “In center with heel” being used to presumably describe the more commonly known bass tone for djembe. This would be a great learning etude for percussion students new to djembe technique, with this type of mostly unison ensemble drumming being an effective way to build community within a program of beginning students. Al- though the rhythmic aspect of the piece is less complex, it is in an audience-engaging style, making “Piece for Ghana” a great choice for the start or closing of a concert.
