ALABAMA SLIDE - A Fox Trot – Charles L. Johnson/arr. Steven Mathiesen 4 M/D
Johnson is one of the “Big Three of Ragtime Music” along with Joplin and Lamb. This piece in the style of an 1800’s Fox Trot. Another great arrangement from Steven Mathiesen.
Percusive Arts Society Review:
Not necessarily one of the more recognizable names, but certainly one of the more prolific composers of ragtime music, Charles L. Johnson’s “Alabama Slide” is arranged here by Steven Mathiesen for a new audience with a marimba band orchestration. Scored for xylophone, marimba quartet, and optional drumset, at first glance this looks familiar to the marimba ensemble treatment of rags by G.H. Green and others, but there are a few variances to note.
The xylophone part, unlike some of the Green rags, is much less virtuosic and extensively doubled by the first marimba. While a bit of chromaticism is to be expected, the accompanying marimba parts are also very accessible, featuring almost exclusively quarter-note rhythms with very few double-stops at a moderate foxtrot tempo throughout. Alternate parenthetical notes are provided for the lowest marimba part, facilitating performance on a low-F marimba if a 5-octave instrument isn’t available. The drumset part is sparsely notated for snare drum and bass drum voices (plus one indicated cymbal roll), requiring some attention to flesh out stylistically. The customary march form is observed with multiple statements of the primary and secondary stanzas followed by a trio and requisite key change. The primary stanza returns in the new key to conclude the work.
Directors looking to expose their ensemble to ragtime music, but without a confident xylophone soloist and with less independent ensemble players, may find this arrangement to be a suitable option.

GRAY FOX, THE - Ryan E. Garner / 5 /MD
Gray Fox Rag adds Ryan's own flavor to the genre of ragtime. However; like the gray fox itself, the piece is not what it seems. The piece explores some odd phrases of seven bars as well as a total of five different tonic areas, much more than the ragtime standard of two. This piece also begins and concludes in a minor key which is also unusual for its ragtime counterparts. Just like the piece, a gray fox is also not what it seems like either. A gray fox boasts a mostly red coat of fur despite its name suggesting otherwise. Seeing the similarities of the two, I decided to name one contradiction after the other: the Gray Fox Rag.
ME-10123
$12.00
Percussive Arts Society Review:
“Gray Fox Rag” is a refreshing take
on the xylophone rag with a forebod-
ing C-minor melody that ties togeth-
er several other distinct melodies.
Composer Ryan Garner intentionally set
out to break the standard format of the
xylophone rag, including unique features
such as seven-measure phrases, five
different tonal centers, and bookending
the piece in minor keys. Otherwise,
this rag contains many elements you
would expect: an allegro tempo, a short dead-stroke section in the middle, and
orchestration with the xylophone soloist accompanied by a marimba quartet. The
composer includes alternate break suggestions for the C-minor and G-major sections and indicates that improvisation is acceptable when desired.
The ensemble parts can all be played with two mallets, with bass-clef reading
required only in marimba three and four.
And, though the piece predominantly
features the xylophone soloist, there is
a short section in the middle that show-
cases the melodic lines in the marimba
ensemble. A high school ensemble can
easily play “Gray Fox Rag,” featuring a
stronger two-mallet player as soloist.

SOLACE: A Mexican Serenade – Scott Joplin/arr. Steven Mathiesen 4 M/D
Scott Joplin’s classic “Mexican Serenade”. This piece in the style of an 1800’s Habanera was used in the movie classic “The Sting”, although this arrangement uses the entire piece instead of just the last section. Another great arrangement from Steven Mathiesen.
Percussive Art Society Review:
This is a lovely arrangement of an already beautiful piece. It was originally written in 1909 as a slow rag, and Steven Mathiesen has done an exemplary job of arranging it for marimba quartet.
The form is very characteristic of ragtime music with a six-part (Introduction, A, B, A, C, Coda) structure. The marimba one and two parts spend most of the piece in harmony with each other, with the first part handling the require intermediate technique. There is also space available for the performers to make a lot of musical decisions, especially at the ends of phrases.
“Solace” would be a lovely edition
to an advanced high school percussion
ensemble or college freshman quartet’s
program, especially for students who are
looking to further their mallet reading
skills. The music is lovely and would be
welcomed by any audience.

SPANISH DANCES - Granados – arr. Don Larsen
The set of “Danzas Espanolas” was composed by Enrique Granados between 1892 and 1900. They are among his earliest works. Inspiration for these arrangements came from hearing a LA Guitar Quartet performance on the radio of the “Villanesca”. I immediately heard the possibilities for an arrangement for mallet ensemble. Alicia De Laroccha’s superb piano performances on CD also inspired me to arrange the “Jota” and “Oriental”. My thanks to my friends and colleagues, members of the Ambira Mallet Ensemble, Murray Houllif, Alec Massaro, Ross Burwasser and Greg Charnon for bringing these arrangements to life.

Percussive Arts Society Reviews:
Oriental - There are 12 works in the “Spanish Dance” (Danzas Españolas) collection by Enrique Granados, composed for piano in 1890. “Oriental” (orientale) is a som- ber waltz, written in C minor throughout and lasting a little over four minutes. The homophonic texture persists through the formal structure, a ternary form consist- ing of an A section in 3/4, a contrasting B section in 6/8, and a recapitulation of the A section in its entirety.
Granados’s work lays nicely on ma-
rimba. The three marimba parts rarely
cross voices; however, there are leaps and
occasional voice crossing that would lim-
it the performance from using one ma-
rimba, but you could easily perform the
piece on two marimbas. The Marimba 1
part presents the most melodic challeng-
es, as it contains multiple ledger lines and
solo moments throughout the piece. The
Marimba 2 part often doubles the more
rhythmically simple ideas of Marimba
1 or 3, and the Marimba 3 part provides
the bass motion and calls for four mallets
in the B section. Although written for a
5-octave marimba, the part offers sugges-
tions of transpositions to accommodate a
4.3-octave instrument.
Larson’s arrangement is a very accu-rate representation of the original score. With the addition of rolls, the marim- bists can sustain lyrical lines in the melody. Due to the nature of the instru- ment, these rolls must be played careful- ly to capture the essence of the original work. The piano solo allows for an eerie wash of sounds with the pedal, and that can be very difficult to reproduce on a marimba. Overall, Larson’s arrangement of “Oriental” is a tender piece appro- priate for high school or undergraduate students looking for a mid-concert work that will not put their audience to sleep, or those looking for an opportunity to showcase a member of their trio.

Jota - Don Larsen’s arrangement of “Jota”is a simple, straight-forward piece for intermediate mallet quartet. Staying true to the original composition, this arrangement breaks up the piano part into four players. With the exception of Player 2, all parts only require two mallets, and each voice stays in a centralrange on the instrument that keeps theparts easily readable and playable.
The challenge with this arrangement is the quick tempo and the long accelerando that encompasses the first half ofthe piece. A developed sense of chamber music skills, musicality, and pacing will be needed to make sure this opening is musically effective. The second half of the piece is a long chorale, giving players the opportunity to work on their rolls, lyrical playing, and cohesion as an ensemble. “Jota” would be appropriate for an intermediate high school percus- sion ensemble, making it an excellent showcase piece for the percussionists in a general band concert or as an opener on a percussion ensemble concert.

Villenesca- If you are looking for a nice selection for your high school or young college ensemble with which to teach ensemble skills, playing together, and taking cues from one another, this is a piece for you. The scoring is very simple and, although it was originally scored for piano, the mallet percussion instruments serve as an excellent substitute that gives the music a bit more of a Spanish flare, reminiscent of the title.
I would have liked to see more of an arrangement with this piece. In the world of percussion, multiple instruments come to mind when the word “Spanish” is in the title. Using some of these instruments to create an underlying texture that is somewhat different from the original would have had a profound effect on the overall outcome. This seems very close, if not identical, to the original piano work, so I would tend to call this more of a transcription than an arrangement. As far as some of the particular voicings, using a glockenspiel instead of the vibraphone in the A sections and returning to the vibraphone in the more tranquil B section would have given the top of the voicing a bit more shimmer.
The score and parts are all very clear and, in fact, the parts are in a larger font so that they are easier to see from a music stand. The price point for this ensemble is right on target, and this would be a welcome addition to any educator’s library. Larsen’s transcription is an effective piece that could be consolidated to two marimbas (Parts 2 and 3) if a third were not available.
