Description

This is an arrangement of Vivaldi’s Concerto Grosso in g minor Op.3 No.2 for Marimba Quartet. The piece is medium to medium challenging in difficulty. Arranged by D. J. Culp Jr. It is not required for all four movements to be performed if the ensemble is not up to the challenge of movement 4. The first movement (Adagio e spiccato) must be immediately followed by movement two (Allegro) as it serves as a prelude. The timing between movements 1 and 2 should only be a second or two, but timing in between remaining movements can be longer. Marimba 1 and Marimba 2 need to perform with different medium hard/hard mallets, as their ranges often overlap. To convey the interplay between parts 1 and 2, they need to have different mallets, but similar attack articulations. Movement 3 (Larghetto) should have the interpretative style of a French Overture. Movement 4 (Allegro) can be performed slower than 100 bpm. However, the director should take care that the movement is not slowed too drastically as it will result in losing its “gigue” implication.
